Training a New Junk Removal Helper on the App in One Day

New helpers show up on a Monday morning and are expected to be useful by Monday afternoon. Nobody has time for a training week, and in junk removal the work does not wait. The good news is that the crew app is small enough to learn on the job, in one day, riding with an experienced driver.

Learn It on Real Jobs

Getting an existing crew on board is covered in Getting a Junk Crew to Actually Use the App. A new helper is easier in one way: they have no old habits to break. Whatever you show them on day one is just how the job works.

The best training is a real day, on real jobs, with someone who already uses the app well. Sitting in the office watching a screen teaches less than three driveways.

Before the Truck Leaves: Setup in the Yard

Ten minutes in the yard covers the setup:

  1. Create the employee. In the office, set them up with their name, a personal PIN and a truck assignment.
  2. Get the app on the phone. Open the link in the browser and install it to the home screen. No app store needed. The steps are in No App Store Needed: Putting the Junk Removal App on Your Crew's iPhones and Androids.
  3. Sign in. Company login and their PIN.
  4. Allow camera and location when the phone asks.
  5. Clock in. First habit of every day, starting now.

Before you leave, tell them the PIN rules: do not share it, do not write it on the dash.

The First Job: Watch

On the first job, the driver does everything and talks it through:

The helper just watches and asks questions. One full job, start to finish, is enough to see the shape of it.

Jobs Two and Three: Photos and Reading the Card

On the next couple of jobs, give the helper the parts that are easiest to own:

Photos are the most important thing for a helper to get right, because they protect the crew. Show them the shots you want: wide, from the doorway, same spot before and after.

Midday: Notes and the Dump

By lunch, add two more things. First, notes: when the customer adds something or changes what goes, the helper writes the note on the job. Short and specific: “Customer added grill and 3 bags, agreed to half load.”

Second, the dump. When the truck is full, show them the Go button that gets directions to where the load is hauled to. At the scale, show them how the tons on the ticket get entered on the job. Even if the driver usually does it, the helper should know how.

Afternoon: Hand Over the Phone

For the last job or two of the day, the helper runs the app and the driver watches. Navigation, reading the card, Start, photos, Complete. The driver only steps in if something goes wrong. At the end of the day, the helper clocks out on their own.

By then, a new helper has done every part of the crew app at least once on a real job. They will not be perfect on day two, but they will not need a second training day either.

What Comes Later

Some things only come with time: knowing which notes are worth writing, spotting when the pile is bigger than the load size on the card, handling a skip when nobody answers the door. Those are judgment calls the senior driver teaches over the following weeks. The app part is done in a day. To see the rest of what the crew app does, visit the JunkBossPro junk removal app page.
