No App Store Needed: Putting the Junk Removal App on Your Crew's iPhones and Androids
The first question most junk removal owners ask about a crew app is not about features. It is “Will it work on the phones my guys already have?” A crew made up of a driver with a two-year-old iPhone, a helper with a cheap Android and a weekend guy with a cracked screen is normal. The app has to work on all of them, today, without a purchase order for new devices.
It Runs in the Browser
The big picture of the crew's day is laid out in Junk Removal App: The Complete Guide for Junk Hauling Companies and Their Crews. This piece is about the very first step: getting the app onto the phone.
The JunkBossPro crew app runs in the phone's web browser. Safari on an iPhone, Chrome on an Android, it does not matter. There is nothing to find in an app store, no account to create with Apple or Google, and no waiting for a download over a weak signal in the yard. You send the crew the link, they open it, and they sign in.
Because it is a browser app, there are no separate iPhone and Android versions to keep track of. Everyone on the crew is looking at the same screens, which makes it easier to train and easier to help someone over the phone when they get stuck.
Install It to the Home Screen
Running in the browser does not mean living in a browser tab that gets lost among forty others. The crew app can be installed to the home screen, where it gets its own icon and opens full screen like any other app.
- iPhone: open the link in Safari, tap the Share button, then “Add to Home Screen.”
- Android: open the link in Chrome, tap the menu, then “Install app” or “Add to Home screen.”
Do it with each new hire on their first morning, before the truck leaves the yard. It takes less time than finding the work gloves.
Updates Without Anyone Doing Anything
App store apps need updating, and crews do not update apps. Somebody is always three versions behind, and the one feature you trained everyone on looks different on their phone. A browser app does not have that problem. When the app improves, everyone gets the same version the next time they open it. Nobody on the crew has to tap Update, and the office does not have to chase anyone.
Personal Phones vs. Company Phones
Plenty of junk companies run on the crew's own phones, and the browser app makes that easy. Nothing to install from a store means nothing to uninstall when someone leaves. The access lives in their personal PIN, and turning off the PIN turns off their access to your jobs, customers and gate codes.
Others keep a company phone in each truck, mounted on the dash or kept in the door pocket. That works too. Each crew member signs in with their own PIN, so even on a shared phone the jobs, photos and clock-ins belong to the right person. How the PIN works is the subject of the next guide.
Whichever way you go, a few things help:
- A charger in every truck. Photos, navigation and GPS all use battery. A cord in the cab is cheap insurance against a dead phone at stop seven.
- A dash mount. Navigation on a phone sliding around the passenger seat is a bad idea in a box truck.
- A case that survives a dropped dresser. Junk work is hard on phones.
What the Phone Needs to Do
The crew app does not ask much of a phone. It needs a browser, a data connection, a camera for before-and-after photos, and location turned on so crew GPS can show on the office map and navigation can start from where the truck is. Any reasonably current iPhone or Android handles all of that.
Navigation opens directions to the customer's address with one tap, and the Go button does the same for the dump, transfer station, donation center or metal recycler on the job. The crew uses whatever maps app they already know on that phone.
The First Morning Checklist
When you roll the app out, run through this list with each person before the first job:
- Open the link and install the app to the home screen.
- Sign in with the company login and their personal PIN.
- Allow location and camera when the phone asks.
- Clock in on the time clock.
- Open the first job and tap the navigation button to make sure directions come up.
If all five work in the yard, they will work at the curb. Getting the rest of the crew comfortable is covered in Getting a Junk Crew to Actually Use the App.
One App for the Whole Crew
Drivers, helpers, the weekend guy and the owner who still hauls on busy days all use the same app on whatever phone they carry. No special hardware, no app store accounts, no version mismatches. To see everything the app does once it is on the phone, visit the JunkBossPro junk removal app page.
