Choosing Junk Removal Software: What to Check Before You Switch
Switching software is a real cost. You spend an afternoon setting it up, a week getting the crew used to it, and a month finding out whether it actually fits. So it's worth checking the things that matter before you commit. This is a checklist built around how junk removal really works, not a list of every feature a sales page can name.
Start With Your Records
Your client records are what you carry from one system to the next, as covered in One Client, Many Addresses: Client Records, Measurements and Reports for Junk Haulers. Before comparing anything else, check that a new system can hold one client with many addresses and bring your list over with a CSV import.
Does It Understand a Junk Job?
Generic field-service software is built for jobs that are an address and a time. A junk job is more. Ask:
- Is there a place for the load size? Min Load through Full Load and multiple loads, not just a notes box.
- Can you record the number of items and what's going?
- Is there a haul-to on the job? Dump, transfer station, donation center, metal recycler, with navigation for the crew.
- Does dump fee overage get onto the invoice without math? Ticket tons, included tons, per-ton rate, done.
- If you drop dumpsters, can it track included days and a daily rate?
If the answer to most of these is “put it in the notes,” the software will end up back in a text thread.
Can You See Unbooked Work on a Map?
Filling the truck is how junk companies make money. Check whether the software shows every request that isn't booked yet, single items, cleanouts and estimate visits, on a map, so you can add nearby jobs to tomorrow's route. A list alone doesn't show you that the mattress is three blocks from the garage. The approach is laid out in The Waiting List Map: Filling the Truck With Requests Near Tomorrow's Route.
Then check dispatch: jobs by day, filter by truck, auto-route from your yard, set the order by hand, print route sheets.
Will Your Crew Actually Use the App?
The best office software fails if the crew won't use the phone side. Check:
- Does it run on the phones your crew already has, iPhone and Android, without special devices?
- Do crew members get their own PIN, so you know who did what?
- Does each job card show the load, items, haul-to and access notes?
- Is it a few taps per job: navigate, Start, photos, Complete?
- Do customers get on-the-way and arrived texts without the crew typing them?
- Is there a time clock on the same phone?
Have a crew member try the demo before you decide. Their reaction tells you a lot.
Does It Get You Paid?
Check the billing side carefully:
- Can Complete create the invoice and charge a card on file in the driveway?
- Can customers pay online if there's no card?
- Is there past-due follow-up?
- Can property managers and realtors get one monthly statement covering every address?
- Do estimates get approved online and turn into the job without retyping?
Commercial accounts are where monthly billing matters. If you have even one property manager sending repeat work, a separate invoice for every trash-out will wear on both of you.
What About the Customer Side?
Customers notice the software too. A customer app with a live route map, chosen alerts, online payment, service requests and referrals cuts the “when are you coming” calls and brings in repeat work. Two-way texting from the office keeps customer conversations off personal phones. Check how many texts a month are included, and whether replies count.
Is the Price Simple?
Software pricing can be hard to read: per user, per truck, add-ons for texting or the crew app. Look for a plan that includes the office, the crew app and the customer app together. JunkBossPro has three plans: Start at $59 a month, Pro at $89 and Crew at $199, with 500, 1,000 or 2,000 texts a month sent and received. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with no credit card. It works in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and bills customers in their own currency.
