Scheduling Single-Item Pickups: Mattresses, Appliances and Hot Tubs Between Bigger Jobs
Single items are the bread and butter of a lot of junk companies. A mattress, a fridge, an old treadmill, a sleeper sofa. Each one is a quick job at a set price, say $129 for a single item. Booked well, a run of single items is one of the best-paying hours in the business. Booked badly, it's a truck driving forty minutes each way for one box spring.
Small Jobs, Big Scheduling Impact
Same-day adds are covered in Fitting Same-Day Junk Removal Calls Into a Day That's Already Booked. Single items are often those same-day calls, but most are booked a day or two out, which gives you a chance to place them well.
The trick with single items is that the job itself is short. The drive is what costs you. So the whole game is putting each single item near something else the truck is already doing.
Write Down Exactly What It Is
“Single item” covers everything from a nightstand to a piano. Before it goes on the schedule, the job should say:
- What it is: “Queen mattress and box spring,” “Upright piano,” “6-person hot tub.”
- Where it is: “Second floor bedroom,” “Back deck, side gate,” “Curb.”
- The number of items and a load size, even if it's Min Load.
- Where it's going: the dump, a donation center, or a metal recycler for an appliance.
That detail shows on the dispatch board and on the crew's card. It tells you how long the stop really takes and how many people it needs.
Not All Single Items Are Quick
A curbside mattress is ten minutes. A hot tub on a back deck might be two hours, a saw, three people and a big chunk of the truck. A piano in a basement needs the right crew and the right equipment. Schedule the hard ones like small jobs, not like single items:
- Give them a real load size, not Min Load.
- Put them early in the day when the crew is fresh.
- Note the extra hands on the job.
The easy ones — curbside items, garage appliances, a couch by the front door — are the ones you sprinkle between bigger stops.
Ask the right questions on the phone to tell the two apart. Is it on the ground floor or upstairs? Does it fit through the door it came in? Is anything plumbed or wired in? Is there a gate or stairs on the way to the truck? A minute of questions at booking saves an hour of surprises in the driveway, and the answers go in the job notes where the crew can read them.
Use the Map to Place Them
When a single-item request comes in without a hard deadline, leave it on the Waiting List for a moment and look at the map. Is there a cleanout nearby this week? A half load two streets over on Thursday? Book the single item on that day and that truck.
You can tell the customer something honest and useful: “We'll be in your neighborhood Thursday, can we grab it then?” Most people say yes. This is covered in more detail in Filling a Half-Empty Junk Truck From the Waiting List.
Single Items on the Small-Load Truck
If you run two trucks, single items usually belong on the truck that runs small loads. That truck does lots of short stops, unloads often, and stays mobile for same-day calls. Putting a curbside mattress on the cleanout truck usually means it waits until the cleanout is done, which might be 4 p.m.
The exception is the single item next door to the cleanout. If the neighbor walks over and asks, the cleanout crew should take it. Add it as a job on the same truck so it gets invoiced.
Appliances and the Haul-To Stop
Appliances often go somewhere different from everything else, like a metal recycler. Each job has its own haul-to stop, so a washer going to the recycler and a couch going to the transfer station can ride on the same truck with two different unload stops. The crew's phone shows both, each with a Go button. What any recycler or dump accepts is their call, so check their rules.
Route Them, Then Let Them Ride
Once single items are on a truck, auto-route the day and they fall into place by distance. Check the order for any with timing, and you're done. Customers get a night-before reminder if they want one and an arrived text when the crew pulls up, so the mattress is at the curb when the truck gets there.
