Tagging Junk Removal Leads by Source: Knowing Which Marketing Books Jobs
Every junk removal owner spends money and time on marketing: ads, a Google listing, door hangers, truck wraps, coffee with realtors. Most can't say with confidence which of those actually pays for itself. Clicks and impressions are easy to count. Booked, paid half-load cleanouts are what matter, and connecting the two takes one small habit.
Clicks Aren't Jobs
Pointing Google and Facebook at your own request form is covered in Google and Facebook Leads: Sending Every Click to Your Own Request Form. Ad platforms report clicks and form views. They don't know whether the customer approved the estimate, how big the load was, or whether they came back in the fall.
Your own records do. If every client carries a tag for where they came from, you can look at your clients and jobs later and see which sources brought in real, paid work.
Tag at the Moment of Conversion
The easiest time to tag is when a request becomes a client. In JunkBossPro, a sign-up converts to a client in one click from Form Responses. Before moving on, add a tag for the source. Clients can carry tags and custom fields, so you can set this up however suits you.
Ask the customer if you're not sure. Switching on the How Did You Hear About Us? field on the request form helps, or just ask in your first text. Either way, you're the one who turns the answer into a tag.
A Simple Set of Source Tags
Keep the list short enough that everyone uses it the same way. A starting set for a junk removal company:
- Google search (ads or the regular listing)
- Google listing, if you want to separate it from ads
- Website, for people who found your site directly
- Referral — customer
- Referral — realtor
- Property manager
- Truck or yard sign
- Repeat, for past customers booking again
- Other, with a note
Resist adding a new tag for every flyer. If you run a specific campaign, a custom field for the campaign name can hold that detail without cluttering your main list.
Tag Partners Too
Realtors and property managers deserve their own tags, and often a custom field with the partner's name. When a seller is referred by a realtor, the seller is the client, but you want to know which realtor sent them. Over time you can see which partners send the most work and thank them accordingly. Partner work is covered in Realtor Referral Partners: Booking Junk Removal for Listings and Closings.
Read the Reports
Once a few months of clients are tagged, JunkBossPro's reports let you look at your work by tag. Useful questions:
- Which sources bring the most clients?
- Which bring the biggest jobs? Facebook might bring lots of single items while Google brings cleanouts.
- Which bring repeat customers? A referred customer who books three times is worth more than a one-time ad lead.
- Which seasons favor which sources? Spring might be heavy on search, moving season on partners.
Then compare against what each source costs you, in money or time. If one source is bringing mostly small jobs at a high ad cost while referrals bring cleanouts for free, that tells you where to spend next season.
Tag Repeat Work Separately
When a past customer comes back, it's tempting to leave the original tag alone. Keep the original source on the client, since that's what brought them in the first time, and note repeat jobs separately. That way you can see both sides: which source brings in new customers, and which of those customers keep coming back.
A Facebook customer who books once and a referral who books three times look the same if you only count new clients. Looking at jobs and invoices per client tells the real story of what each source is worth over a year.
Keep It Consistent
Tags only work if everyone uses them. A few habits:
- Make it part of converting. No client is finished without a source tag.
- Agree on the names. “Facebook” and “FB” split your data in two.
- Check monthly. Look at new clients from the past month and fill in any missing tags.
It takes a few seconds per client and pays off the first time you have to decide whether to renew an ad budget.
Spend Where the Jobs Come From
Tag every new client by source and read the reports each season, and you'll know which marketing books paid jobs rather than just clicks. For how tagging fits with the request form, Form Responses and booking, visit the JunkBossPro junk removal booking software page.
