Pricing Junk Removal by the Truck Load: Quarter, Half, Three-Quarter and Full

Load-based pricing is the way most junk removal companies sell residential work, and for good reason. The truck is the thing you are really selling: space in it, the trip to the dump, and the hands to fill it. Customers do not know what a cubic yard looks like, but they can picture a pickup bed or a box truck. A price per load turns a vague pile into a number.

Why Price by the Load

Load sizes sit at the heart of the service list described in Building a Junk Removal Service List So Every Estimate Starts From Your Own Prices. Here is how to make them work on an estimate.

Pricing by the load ties the price to what actually costs you money. A full truck takes more labor to fill, more time at the dump and more dump fees than a quarter truck. It also scales cleanly. The customer with a recliner and the customer with a full basement are both buying a share of the same truck, just a different share.

The Four Sizes Customers Understand

Most estimates use four main sizes. Example prices are only there to show the steps; your own list sets the real ones.

Give each size a short description customers can compare to their own pile. “About a pickup bed and a half” or “roughly a king mattress stacked to your chest” helps more than a volume number.

Load Sizes in JunkBossPro

Every junk job in JunkBossPro has a truck load field: Min Load, 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, Full Load, 1.5, 2 or 3 loads. The estimate carries the size you expect, and the job carries the size you actually hauled.

Next to the load sit the number of items, what is going in plain words and where it is hauled to: dump, transfer station, donation center or metal recycler. The crew sees all of it on their phone. When the card says “3/4 Load · 14 items · Basement couch, treadmill, boxes · Transfer station,” nobody has to call the office to ask what the job is.

Estimate the Load Without Overpromising

The customer's description is rarely complete. People forget the shelf in the back, or the second pile under the deck. A few habits help:

Volume Is Not Weight

A full load of furniture and a quarter load of shingles might weigh about the same at the dump. If your load prices include a set weight, say so on the estimate, along with your per-ton rate past it. JunkBossPro lets you set the tons included and the per-ton rate. Enter the tons from the dump ticket, and the overage is added to the invoice automatically, spelled out line by line. Matching the Truck to the Job

Load size also helps dispatch. Many companies run one truck on single items and small loads and another on cleanouts and big jobs. When the approved estimate becomes a job, its load size tells the office which truck it belongs on and how much room is left on that truck's day. The Waiting List map shows every unbooked request, so a quarter-load job near tomorrow's route is easy to spot and fit in.

When the Size Changes on Site

Sometimes the half load turns into a full load. The crew should stop before loading the extra, show the customer the next size up on the price list they already saw, and get an okay. The office updates the load on the job so the invoice matches. A clear price for each step makes that conversation short and calm instead of an argument at the tailgate.

Keep the Steps Even

Customers notice when the jump from half to three-quarter is much bigger than the jump from quarter to half. Even steps feel fair and are easy to explain. Your minimum and your single-item prices should fit under the quarter-load price in a way that makes sense too.
